Abstract

Mood disorders, mostly depression, are reported to be most common in pts with epilepsy. 200 patients with epilepsy consecutively seen from April 1 1997 to September 30 1997 and 200 age and sex-matched controls were enrolled and subjected to clinical interview. Pts with epilepsy and matched controls received CDQ-IPAT Depression Scale and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-I/P, version 2.0) for a syndromic classification of mood disorders. Pts with epilepsy reported a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms (49 vs 31%) and major depressive episodes (28 vs 14%). The data may be explained in part by the lower education and the occupational status of the cases.
