On the basis of recent experience, a proposal is made for the technical organization and development of preventive occupational health services. The aim is to allow an effective process of decentralization of organization and operations in this sector to be put into practice, and at the same time to coordinate the role and duties assigned to each unit. The project distinguished three horizontal levels which are closely inter complementary: 1)basic services which are already operated by Local Government Councils and Area Health Committees. 2) Out patient and extra mural occupational health services to be organized within the hospitals in accordance with regional planning, as a technical instrumental specialistic basis for assistance provided by the basic services in the factory 3) University occupational health clinics, together with other institutes of the technical faculties or of the National Research Council, which should re establish their institutional role, aiming at teaching and scientific research programmes which reflect the needs and development of the first and second level services. The tasks and duties assigned to the organization belonging to each of the three levels are illustrated and discussed, particular attention being given to those aspects which should ensure reciprocal coordination.
