A practical method to reduce uncertainty in dose to patients undergoing electron beam therapy with rectangular fields

Abstract

This technical note presents the results of an experimental analysis on the validity of the equivalent field concept in electron beam therapy. The depth dose values along central axis of various rectangular fields for 6, 9, and 12 MeV electron energy were compared with the corresponding values obtained with equivalent square fields. Best results were obtained with the square root method, that reduces uncertainty below 3%. On the basis of the experimental results, a method is suggested to further reduce this uncertainty.
