Although mental retardation is an important risk factor for psychiatric disorders, it is rarely studied from a psychiatric perspective, particularly in the case of children and adolescents. The aim of this paper is to present an analysis of the psychiatric specificity of mental retardation in five areas : nosography of mental disorders in mental retardation ; psychopathology ; diagnostic instruments ; clinical phenomenology ; pharmacotherapeutic and psychotherapeutic interventions.
