A supernumerary small-sized ring chromosome has been detected in a patient with mental retardation and congenital malformations. The ring chromosome was present in 91% of examined metaphases. G, C and R bands, after 5-bromodeoxiuridine incorporation in vitro and staining with acridine orange, appeared to be inadequate to characterize further the ring chromosome.
