Abstract

A case of acute haemolysis occurred in a patient suffering from Burkitt-like lymphoma who underwent stem cell aphaeresis. Before the stem cell collection procedure, a femoral venous catheter was inserted. A continuous flow cell separator type CS 3000 Baxter was used for the harvest. During the stem cell aphaeresis a haemolysis in the harvest bag occurred along with black urine emission thus the procedure was stopped. Laboratory data was consistent with a non immunological acute haemolysis with normalization of values within 48 hours. The acute haemolysis observed in our patient is a very rare event probably due to mechanical stress as the haemolysis occurring in cardiac valves carrier patients.
