Abstract

We conducted a multicenter case-control study on alcohol use as a risk factor for generalized tonic-clonic seizures. The study is ongoing: in the first 71 cases and 142 controls the odds ratio was 6.1 (95% confidence limits = 2.4-15.8) for alcoholics. The risk increased with increasing alcohol use: it was 1.4 (0.7-3.0) for less than 50 g of ethanol per day, 8.1 (0.7-31.6) for 51-100 g. per day and 9.5 (0.8-135.2) for 101-200 g. per day.
