Abstract

In Italy, all cytotoxic medications must be handled following the Italian Pharmacopeia rules "Norme di Buona Preparazione". Customizing a dosage of an injectable drug is equivalent to prepare a galenic medication, then it should be done under the responsability of a pharmacist. Therefore, the objective of this report is to describe the analysis conducted on the process for the centralized management of antiblastic agents in ULSS Companies, Hospital Companies, IRCCS and private hospitals accredited by the Veneto Region, with special focus on the role and responsibilities of hospital pharmacists in the handling of chemotherapeutic drugs. The analysis of the responses received shows that more than 60% of the hospitals have centralized the procedures within a Unit for cytotoxic drug preparations [Unità Farmaci Antiblastici (UFA)] under the responsibility and coordination of the hospital pharmacist or entered into agreements with UFAs nearby. Finally, Veneto Region Deliberation n. 1335 of July 28th, 2014 established the implementation of the Recommendations n. 14 on preventing errors in anticancer drug therapy and defined the standards for centralizing the oncology therapies in the Veneto Region.
