Abstract

Meropenem is a new stable carbapenem antibiotic with excellent antibacterial activity. We evaluated the 'in vitro' activity on recent clinical isolates of common bacteria and we compared the results to that of imipenem, ceftazidime, cefriaxone and gentamicin. The results obtained demonstrate that meropenem is more active than imipenem on Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonoas aeruginosa. We have demonstrated that both meropenem and imipenem produce an 'in vitro' post-antibiotic effect against Gram negative strains.
