Abstract

The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and related complex of symptoms seen etiologically linked to human T lymphotropic type III (HTLV-III). We have evaluated, by using a micro ELISA test, serum samples of patients at risk living in Veneto region, mainly hemophiliacs and drug abusers: about 14% of the 88 hemophiliac patients and 26% of the 42 drug abusers were positive for HTLV-III antibodies. In contrast, none of 85 volunteer blood donors and laboratory employees were positive, demonstrating that HTLV-III infection does occur in the population at risk also in Veneto areas.
