Ten subjects affected by secondarily generalized epilepsy underwent therapy with Mg-valproate and the results were evaluated by quantifying the spike epileptic activity on night sleep EEG recordings before and after therapy; epileptic spikes were counted per minute and per sleep stage. Mg-valproate was used either as add-on therapy or took the place of Na-valproate when this latter was already used. For this report four subjects only were evaluated; because of the reduced sample, we could apply the signs test in the evaluation of the results: a statistical significance (in the sense of a reduction of the epileptic activity after therapy with Mg-valproate) was shown only during S 1, while during WASO, S 2 and stage REM, only a trend was observed in the same direction (the reduction of the epileptic activity was observed in 3 subjects out of 4).
