Abstract

Infant formula in Italy are all in conformity with CODEX Standard for Infant Formula; they may vary for quality and quantity of the so called "functional nutrients". In this article infant formula supplementation with prebiotics and probiotics for the prevention of allergies and infections is considered. We have searched literature for scientific evidences supporting this supplementation in healthy and at term birth infants. There are few and inconclusive evidences regarding the efficacy of a supplementation with prebiotics and probiotics for the prevention of allergies and respiratory and gastrointestinal infections.
