Tumors of central nervous system represent, after acute leukemia, the first cause of death in children after one year of age (excluding accidents); about 20 cases per milion of children per year are affected by such malignancies. However, specialied centers are insufficient for several reasons. This paper represents the first part of a three-section study of CNS tumors and presents epidemiologic and clinical aspects of tumors arising in the brain.
