Abstract

In the framework of a national research programme, a study on the organizational features of neurology facilities dealing with MS has been conducted in 1996 in 12 Italian regions. It confirmed the existance of variation in availability of resources for the care of MS, and in access to specific services. However, the implications on quality of care of these structural aspects remain unclear. We are planning the organization of a network of neurology ..facilities, aimed at conducting a cohort study on the impact of different levels of organization, accessibility and availability on quality of care. The study will focus on the interaction between patient/facility which will be explored both on the side of supply and of demand. A consecutive sample of MS patients will be prospectively collected and followed up over time. This sample will give information on patient's needs, type of procedures adopted and specialist consultations requested. A survey on patient's attitudes, expectations and satisfaction with care will also be conducted.
