Automatic analysis of muaps of the biceps brachii and tibialis anterior muscles in men

Abstract

The method of automatic outline analysis of EMG signals has been developed and carried out. The parameters of MUAPs were picked up by an Adrian needle electrode from the biceps brachii muscles in six subjects: three healthy ones and three affected by different neurologic illnesses. In a second group MUAPs have been considered from tibialis anterior. They were eleven subjects without clinical and EMG signs of peripheral nerve involvement with an age range 27 to 75 years. Duration, amplitude, number of phases and number of peaks have been taken into consideration. The average value obtained in each case has been statistically compared. The findings are consistent in showing significant differences according to the age range among the normal control subjects, as well as in normal and pathological values. Although the method needs further corrections the authors think it useful together with statistical studies more rapidly forming an opinion in the earlier stage of the diseases and a better differentiation of borderline cases.
