Abstract
As an introduction to the meeting, the author gives a brief account of the situation of the blood transfusion service and of the availability of plasma fractions in Italy. Evidence is given that plasmapheresis from unpaid donors is the only way to make available sufficient amounts of source plasma in a reasonably short period of time.
