Abstract

An 18 month-old child underwent orthotopic heart transplantation because of congenital heart disease. One week after the transplantation the child developed clinical symptoms which were thought to be related to acute rejection. Afterwards it revealed itself as a bacterial endocardite. A treatment with appropriate antibiotics resulted in complete resolution of symptoms and reduction of the vegetation. 24 months after the episode he has a normal cardiac function and a moderate tricuspid valve regurgitation still persists.
