Abstract
This review considers the main problems that are concerning the preoperative and postoperative treatments in order to reduce the risk of edophtalmitis after ophthalmic surgery. The rationale for this type of prophylaxis is actually well established as well the optimal choice of antibiotic agents that may reduce the risk of ophthalmic infection after surgery. The role of topical disinfectans, as povidone-iodine, is also considered.
