The expression of α1-6 subunits of the β1 (VLA, Very Late Activation) integrin family was studied in normal human kidney using an amplified immunofluorescence technique. On glomeruli, α1, α2, α3 subunits showed a mesangial-endothelial distribution pattern, while α5 and α6 were present only on the endothelia. α3β1 was the dominant integrin on glomerular capillary wall, being polarized on basolateral surfaces of podocyte foot processes. On the endothelia of arterioles and peritubular capillaries, all subunits but α4 were present. Our results confirm and complete the phenotypical characterization of β1 integrins in kidney: further studies are needed to ascertain a possible role for these molecules in renal diseases.
