Recent data on the distribution and metabolism of dl-fenfluramine are reviewed and a probable mechanism of action by which this compound induces a decrease in food intake is discussed. The results of work carried out mainly in rats under different experimental conditions indicate that the d- and l-isomers of fenfluramine are metabolized in different ways. Furthermore, the two isomers show differentpharmacological andneuro-chemical activity. The contribution of the principal metabolites, d-andl-norfenfiuramine, to the various effects of fenfluramine is discussed.
