The search for the distal holes of blocked intramedullary splints used in the osteosynthesis of femoral and tibial fractures is carried out with the aid of an image intensifier (BW). The authors present an alternative solution using a probe to detect the electromagnetic field produced by a microcoil placed in the pin using a rod and positioned in the area of the hole to be located. The electromagnetic field is coaxial with the hole and a pointer system displayed on screen shows the centre of the hole, corresponding to the point of intersection between two Cartesian axes. The authors explain the underlying physical principle and report the preliminary clinical experience of a multicentre study in 30 patients, 28 with femoral fractures and 2 with leg fractures treated with intramedullary fracture fixation with blocked pin. The method is straightforward and avoids exposure to harmful ionizing radiation required by conventional research.
