The blood level of histamine was measured in 38 patients with hepatic cirrhosis at various stages of severity. There was an increased mean level of blood histamine in these patients as compared with controls; this increase is particularly remarkable when the functional impairment of the liver is more serious. The exact meaning of these data cannot be fully realized now, but it is worth further investigation in relation to the outstanding position of the liver in the metabolic process of histamine. It could also be defined as the cause of certain syndromes which are often associated with hepatic cirrhosis. (22 references)
