Abstract

Magnesium and calcium serum levels were evaluated in patients with hyperthyroidism and multinodular goitre in the immediate pre-operative period and after total thyroidectomy. Calcium concentrations did not differ in the two groups while Mg concentrations were significantly lower in hyperthyroid than in euthyroid patients. After surgery, Mg levels were significantly lower in patients with hyperthyroidism than in those with euthyroid goitre during the period of observation (days 1-9). No significant differences between the two groups were found for Ca levels during the same period.
