Abstract
While certain cancers become less frequent, tobacco-related malignancies are on the rise, specially in the female population. On the other hand, increased incidence of some tumours is related to the development of early detection methods, and the stable absolute number of deaths related to those tumours is probably the demonstration that indeed the early detection allows a curative approach. We report several examples of the importance of the association of radiation therapy and chemotherapy, indicating that a multidisciplinary approach to cancer therapy is an absolute must. Commercialization of taxoids, aromatase blockers, topoisomerase I inhibitors, and new antimetabolites testifies of the extraordinary development of the medical therapy of solid tumours and hematologic malignancies.
