Abstract
A congenital heart defect (CHD) is an abnormality that is present at birth. Congenital heart surgery was practiced before the heart-lung machine was developed as surgeons started to work on abnormalities of the arteries of the heart. Dr. John Streider at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston tied off a patent ductus arteriosus in a child on 6 March 1937.
