Abstract
We reviewed a wide range of protection devices developed for the prevention of distal embolization during percutaneous interventions in carotid arteries. Theron Balloon, PercuSurge® Guardwire System, filter-based devices and proximal occlusion devices were accurately described. The results of clinical observation in each of them provided evidence that percutaneous procedures in carotid arteries, performed with neuroprotection are safe and effective in comparison to historical controls. However, there are several issues that remain to be addressed and larger clinical trials will provide a clearer picture of the role of neuroprotection during PTA and stenting placement.
