Chains of superparamagnetic nanoparticles

Abstract

A method is proposed to prepare chains of superparamagnetic iron oxide particles with blocking temperature higher than the nanoparticles. γ-Fe2O3 superparamagnetic nanoparticles chains were used to investigate the chains formation. The study used molecular dynamic simulation to investigate the self-assembled monolayer. The study also used transmission electron microscopy (TEM) that determined the the average diameter of spherical nanoparticles. The particles were washed with ethanol during the study to eliminate the unbound ligands. The scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) was used to investigate the ligand shell morphology. It was observed during the experiment that the 1-D chains of superparamagnetic nanoparticles can be obtained by applying a magnetic field to produce magnetic dipolar coupling between the particles.
