Abstract
In summary, therefore, this session indicated that there is a need for a standard scoring system relating to the level of sedation. Confusion exists because many doctors and other staff use drugs that are not specific sedatives to sedate patients (e.g. opioids). A further problem is that there is no standard system to measure pain, neither is there a system to routinely assess stress. During sedation, these three elements complement each other and when a drug is used to control one element, such as pain, there is an effect on the other elements. This area requires further investigation.
