A study of the effects on neuropsychological performances of carbamazepine therapy has been performed in six controls subjects and in seven patients (4 males and 3 females) suffering from temporal lobe epilepsy. After the first administration of CBZ a significant decrease in the test of verbal memory (short and long-term) was observed only in the epileptic patients. After one month of CBZ therapy, in the epileptic patients no significant variations in the neuropsychological tests were noted. Our data suggests that CBZ therapy does not interfere with the cognitive functions.
