Abstract

Automatic staplers for bronchial stump closure were used in 152 patients undergoing pulmonary resection (58 pneumonectomies, 70 lobectomies and 24 bilobectomies). All the patients had a minimal follow-up of 6 months. Three bronchial fistulas were registered (1.9%); there were no other complications. The post-operative period in hospital was shorter than that of patients undergoing conventional suture. The bronchial wall tolerated metallic agraffes better than the conventional method. The mechanical bronchial closure can be considered a sure, simple and speedy technique. It is especially recommended in left pneumonectomy and in re-operations.
