Abstract

Many factors may affect the stability and compatibility of TPN mixtures: 1) type and concentration of carbohydrate, aminoacid solutions and lipid emulsions, electrolytes, trace elements and vitamins; 2) order of mixing; 3) addition of drugs; 4) exposure to sunlight; 5) temperature and length of storage. In the last 15 years medical and technological advances have resulted in availability of large volume plastic bags for TPN. Their advantages in hospital and home parenteral nutrition have been clearly demonstrated. Nevertheless, recent reports outline specific interactions between some plastic materials and TPN mixtures.
