Abstract

Esculapio is a data retrieval system for digestive endoscopy units. It operates in a Network environment or runs on MS-DOS personal computers. It allows: the report of diagnostic and operative manœuvres of the upper, lower and bilio-pancreatic tracts and laparoscopy method, the storage of endoscopic and clinical data and their retrieval, the capture and storage of the images of the endoscopic exams as well as their simultaneous processing, the statistical analysis of the data, the storage and retrieval of patients' histological records. The program front end has been made user-friendly by using windows, menu bars, and pop-up boxes. Terminology includes the 3rd edition of the OMED system and the histological data are stored with the SNOMED codes. Once all data are introduced, a report in codified language is produced. Its generation takes one minute on average. At present in Italy 170 centres use it and 42 % of them make a daily use for all their endoscopic activities. The program is connected to a filing and images management system: ES IMAGE which archives all digital endoscopic or radiological findings on a WORM disk.
