Within the framework of current studies aimed at highlighting the molecular basis of the toxicity of mercury for the cardiovascular, nervous, renal and immune systems, we discuss the biological role of mercury conjugates with glutathione compounds and with functional proteins, with reference to their ability to disturb the redox signalling pathways based on S-nitrous and S-glutathionyl hemoglobin.
