A number of epidemiological, toxicological, and clinical papers on drug abuse and driving impairment were reviewed. Attention was paid to many substances of abuse (opiates, cannabinoids, cocaine, amphetamines, alcohol, LSD, PCP) or drugs that are therapeutically used too (antidepressants, antipsychotics, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, pentazocin, zipeprol, buprenorphine, codeine). The effects on driving were thoroughly examined. The epidemiological, toxicological, and clinical data may be useful to standardize the assessment of driving ability by means of suitable toxicological analysis to evaluate the abuse of opiates, cannabinoids, cocaine, amphetamines, methadone and alcohol.
