Abstract

Contrast-induced-nephropathy (CIN) is a well known complication of coronary angiography and coronary intervention procedures. It may determine an adverse clinical outcome, an extension of hospitalization, and a rise in costs. Several contrast- and patient-related factors increase the risk of CIN, which may develop in up to 50% of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary procedures. This article faces the problem of CIN, with particular regards to the identification of patients at risk, to the different risk profile of the various type of contrast media, and to the specific prevention strategies.
