Abstract

During a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbation, the patient has a decreased level of physical activity and meets a loss of autonomy in activities of daily living. Pulmonary rehabilitation has proven effective in reducing dyspnea and improving quality of life and muscle retraining programs can produce significant clinical improvement in exercise capacity in COPD patients, while it is doubtful the usefulness of bronchial hygiene and generic breathing exercises. However, pulmonary rehabilitation in COPD patients is still underused in the course of exacerbation and its aftermath. The presence in the team of care of a specialist figure such as the respiratory therapist could make more direct patient access to this type of intervention, to limit damage related to inactivity and to promote an earlier recovery of the functional activity after acute exacerbation of COPD.
