Abstract
The economic cost related to epilepsy is one of the major points of the International League against Epilepsy, cost must be defined in three components: direct cost, indirect cost and intangible cost. Direct cost is the expenditure for the treatment (pharmacological, neurosurgical, rehabilitative) for persons with epilepsy. The pharmacological cost in Italy is still very limited as it represent less than 1% of the total national pharmacological expenditure. Drug resistant epilepsies absorb over half the cost but only 6% of this cost is devoted to pharmacological cost. The indirect and the intangible costs must be calculated in further studies.
