Abstract

Mycotic opportunistic infections have an important role in the clinical manifestations of the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome: among them, cryptococcosis represents the most severe complication. The Authors enhance the importance of a constant clinical and microbiological follow-up of AIDS patients affected wwith cryptococcosis. The study involves 18 cases of cryptococcal infection that were diagnosed in the recent years at the Department of Infectious Diseases of the IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo - University of Pavia. Particularly, the Authors would like to stress the importance of the constant determination of the antigen level both in the cerebrospinal fluid and in the serum, in order to monitor the real efficacy of the therapy and to early detect possible relapses.
