Automatisms are defined as a more or less coordinated involuntary motor activity occurring during the state of clouding consciousness either in the course of, or after an epileptic seizure, and usually followed by amnesia for the event. The activity may be the continuation of an ongoing activity or the development of a new activity. According to semeiology point of view automatisms may be distinguished in oro-alimentary, mimick, gestural, verbal ambulatory. Ictal automatisms may represent the release of an "innate" behaviour. Oro-alimentary automatisms that appear early in the course of a seizure may localize to the mesial temporal structures.
