Aim. The purpose of this study was to assess quality of life (QoL) and its possible demographic, clinical and therapeutic determinants, ascertain the possible prevalence of depressive symptomatology and analyse the correlation between QoL and depression over the long term following heart transplant. Methods. The transverse observational study included all patients (329) who had received a heart transplant at the San Matteo Polyclinic of Pavia, between 1985 and 1994. Subjects alive at the moment of the follow-up and who had been transplanted between 10 and 15 years previously (96 in all) were evaluated clinically and completed the Medical Outcome Study-36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF36) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) questionnaires.
