Adequate assessment of cardiac function in patients who have undergone open intracardiac operations requires determination of cardiac output. A simple, non invasive technique for determining cardiac output on the basis of electrical impedance variations is described and discussed. Measurement of cardiac output in the immediate postoperative period allowed important innovations in the care of the patients: preclinical diagnosis of low cardiac output and prophylactic treatment; artificial pacing at optimal rate; prompt assessment of the effectiveness of the treatment.
