Abstract

Studied the ability of 144 3-6 yr. Olds to understand the syntactic structure of heard sentences as a function of sex and socioeconomic level. In an increasing measure, socioeconomic level influenced syntactic comprehension. Sex was not a significant factor. Results are discussed in connection with the role of linguistic stimulation in language development and the different relationships that language comprehension and production have with the underlying linguistic competence.
