Abstract

Objective: We considered the problem of surgical treatment of associated uterovaginal and anorectal malformations, the literature data on their embryology, frequency and diagnosis, and a recent 'ad hoc' classification. Methods: Correct diagnosis of malformations was made by clinical examination, ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging and laparoscopy in order to select the most appropriate surgical treatment. Proctoneovaginohysterostomy and sigmoid colon pullthrough were performed in menarchal age as an alternative to a sacroperineal operation in paediatric age. Results: The patients are generally well, with regular, afebrile, painless menstrual cycles. The new vagina is soft and the anal sphincters are continent. Conclusion: Proctoneovaginohysterostomy with sigmoid colon pullthrough at menarchal age, proved an excellent surgical procedure to correct vaginal agenesis, hematometra and vestibular anus.
