Abstract

A clinical, diagnostic and interpretative comparison is made between thyrolymphadenography and thyroid scintiscans on the basis of findings in 71 adenoma, goitre, cyst and tumour patients observed during 1969 to 71. Scanning gave typical pictures of reduced uptake in function of nodule size in cases of colloidocystic goitre, while adenography showed well defined lobe filling deficiencies of varying diameter; in patients with small nodes, good opacification of the collectors and drainage stations was obtained. In cancer, typical hot and cold areas were noted. Here adenography gave perfect tumour outlines, with clear borders in differentiated and irregular, fringed borders in undifferentiated forms. Good visualisation of many local lymph centres and metastases was also obtained. Adenography is thus of assistance in the discovery of very small nodules or formations lying mostly outside the gland; these usually escape scintiscan detection. As in 2 cases in the present series, so called 'occult cancers of the thyroid' may be demonstrated with this technique.
