An abnormal nutritional state is often found in Duchenne muscular dystrophy: 54% of dystrophic children are obese by the age of 13 years and a similar percentage are underfed by the age of 18 years. The aim of the present study was to compare caloric intake and actual energy expenditure of 9 children affected by the disease (age range 6-12 years). All patients underwent anthropometry. Dietetic habits were recorded by means of a questionnaire. Energy expenditure was evaluated by indirect calorimetry and activity diaries. The study showed that all children are in a positive energy balance; mean caloric excess is about 200 kcal in walking children and 600 in not walking patients. This imbalance results from an excessively high caloric intake compared to the low level of physical activity which is found in these patients.
