The hospital financing system based on the Diagnosis Related Groups started in Italy on January 1th, 1995. In the USA the above mentioned system came into force since 1983, but it did not work for paediatric patients. As a matter of fact, the system was created to classify Medicare patients, most of them older than 65 years. The aim of this study is to verify the efficacy of DRGs in classifying all the newborn admitted to the Bambino Gesù Children 's Hospital in Rome from January to September 1995. The Major Diagnostic Category 15 includes newborn and children hospitalized for neonatal diseases. On the other hand, some newborn are classified in other categories of the DRGs. This different classification is due to that the DRGs do not take into account fundamental parameters such as age and birth weight. The Authors underline the system anomalies and foresee all DRGs testing to provide a better contribution to the neonatal groups making them more homogeneous and exhaustive under a clinical and treatment point of view.
