Abstract
The authors present an overview of controlled studies on the efficacy of drugs and psychotherapy on some of the main psycho-relational problems in childhood. Serotonin re-uptake inhibitors - unlike tricyclic compounds - are effective in anxiety and depression disorders as well as in obsessive-compulsive disorders. Psycho-stimulant drugs represent the first choice in the treatment of ADHD. Cognitive-behavioural therapy is effective in the treatment of depression, phobia, obsessive compulsive disorder. Psychoanalysis is effective in treating major depressive disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder. Combined pharmacological and psycotherapical treatment generally obtain better results.
