Abstract

To ascertain the eventual hazard of an early exercise testing and the usefulness of the rehabilitation on patients who had suffered an extensive myocardial infarction, the authors studied 50 patients with recent myocardial infarction involving the electrocardiographic leads D 1, aVL, V 1-V 6. All the patients performed a maximal 'symptom-limited' exercise test 30 days after the onset of the infarction. No patient in the whole group suffered any complication either during or soon after the test, or in the following 24-36 hours. Afterwards, the total study group was randomly subdivided in two groups, consisting of 25 subjects each. The groups were found to be homogeneous concerning patient age, complication during the acute phase of the illness, maximal CPK serum enzyme elevation, X-ray volume of the heart and maximal work capacity in kg as evaluated by the exercise test. Following randomization, group A patients were engaged in a 6 week physical training program. Group B patients did not perform any supervised physical activity. At the close of this period, all the A and B patients underwent a second exercise test. Group A patients increased their own physical work capacity (+65.5%, P
