Abstract

Background. To evaluate the effects of a modest calcium and vitamin D supplementation on the main parameters of bone turnover. Methods. 13 post-menopausal women with a low bone mass taking a daily supplement of calcium (285 mg) and vitamin D (120 UI) were studied. The following parameters were measured: (on serum) total and ionized calcium, phosphatemia, creatinine, parathyroid hormone (PTH), bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BSAP), osteocalcin (OC), C-terminal telopeptide (CTx); (on urine) calcium, creatinine, N-terminal telopeptide (NTx). Results. Calcium serum levels, both ionized and total, and calcium urinary excretion were significantly increased after 3 months of supplementation. On the contrary, the serum levels of PTH and the bone reabsorption markers (serum CTx and urine NTx) showed a significant reduction. Serum phosphate levels and bone formation markers (BSAP and OC) did not show any relevant change. Conclusions. The study has shown that even a modest increase in the daily intake of calcium and vitamin D can determine a reduction of PTH levels and bone resorption indexes in post-menopausal women with a reduction of bone mass. These changes, if maintained in the long term, could help in controlling the increase of bone resorption that is often present in these patients.
