Abstract

Dihydroergocristine, an ergot alkaloid derivative, has an inhibitory effect on prolactine (PRL) release in man. In order to investigate whether the responses obtained are due to a direct effect on the pituitary or are mediated through extrapituitary mechanisms, we studied the effect of the drug on PRL release in a system of isolated and dispersed rat pituitary cells. The reduction of PRL release obtained in this test system is due to a direct effect.
